CBS and YouTube…

“When you have something the public really wants, the economic value in that is to come up with a way to satisfy the rights holders and serve the consumers.”-David Poltrack, CEO of CBS
That’s exactly what I’ve been saying all these years, along with most of the Digerati. In short, CBS has shown tremendous gains due to YouTube. For the whole back story check out Mashable’s Take. Why fight new media and distribution channels instead of embracing it? Every media company is afraid to “give their content away” or open it up to a simple Non-DRM distribution like YouTube. CBS finally showed us all: Reduce The Friction, and It Will Help in The Long Run. I’m just waiting for a major artist, we’re talking Mariah Carey/ Creed level of popularity artist to offer their album for free via download without DRM for the first few days. I will bet this will have a helluva impact in the long run. Ticket sales, new fans, remixes, DVDs, promotions, etc. Business is all about risk. It’s time the rest of the media world, followed in CBS’ footsteps and took some risk.
